new macassar guitar

Thought you guys might enjoy a peek and one of the guitars on the old building bench.

This one is going to have a bunch of extras...Macassar back and sides, auxilliary sound ports in the upper bout, Laskin style armrest, spalted rosette, etc.

The macassar is one of 4 sets I managed to get from a lucky find. Too bad the lumber yard where I found it cut the slabs too thick (and with a circular saw, to boot!), resulting in lots of waste. There could have ben 10-12 sets from this log instead of 4.... :(

The top is master grade Englemann from Ed Dicks, NICE!! :)



My poor photo doesn't do the woods justice, I'm afraid..

thats some real nice ebony. keep the pics coming as you progress. gotta hate when wood like that gets wasted. atleast your 4 sets will survive and the rest didn't go in vain

Wow, nice looking wood, Russ. The cut outs on the bracing are interesting. What is the theory behind it?

Bruce,

There are a couple of purposes for the cutouts in the bracing, first is that it lightens the braces, while still allowing them to retain the domed shape of the back.

Secondarily, they allow the back to vibrate a bit more and contribute (albeit in a small way) to the overall sound of the guitar.
